A Baltimore city firefighter died and four others were injured as they battled a fire inside a group of rowhouses in northwest Baltimore on Thursday, agency officials said.

Firefighters reported heavy fire conditions inside a two-story rowhouse after they were called to the 5200 block of Linden Heights Avenue about 3:45 p.m., said Kevin Cartwright, a fire department spokesman.

The fire intensified as it spread to three other rowhouses and the incident commander ordered more units to the scene. Responders included the department’s Rapid Intervention Team, which rescues firefighters.

The team pulled five firefighters from inside the burning structure, Cartwright said. Paramedics took them to a hospital for treatment of injuries including serious burns, he said.

One firefighter later died and four others remained hospitalized Thursday night, Cartwright said.

Officials did not release the firefighters’ names. No others were injured, Cartwright said.

It was not immediately clear whether any of the rowhouses were occupied. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
