Today’s daily digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: The afternoon downpours would ordinarily be a downer, but we really need some rain.

Express forecast

  • Today: Showers and storms likely, especially in the afternoon. Highs: 80 to 85.
  • Tonight: Showers and storms at times, especially early. Lows: 71 to 76.
  • Tomorrow: Partly sunny with afternoon showers and storms. Highs: 86 to 91.

Forecast in detail

This has a good chance to be the wettest week of the summer so far and, with drought expanding and intensifying, we need it. While it won’t rain all the time, there’s at least the chance of showers and storms daily through Friday — some of them will probably be heavy and could even cause some flooding. Conveniently, the pattern looks to shift to a drier one in time for the weekend.

Today (Monday): Clouds dominate with increasing chances for showers and storms, especially during the afternoon. Some could produce downpours and even some pockets of flooding in poor drainage areas. While it’s very humid, the clouds keep temperatures in check with highs only 80 to 85. Winds are light from the southeast. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Showers and storms remain a good bet this evening and could continue to produce areas of heavy rain. They should decrease some overnight with muggy lows from 70 to 75. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): We should have a bit more sunshine than Monday helping to push highs back up to near 90. Showers and storms, some heavy, are possible in the afternoon but will probably be somewhat less numerous than Monday. Winds are light from the southwest. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Showers and storms remain a possibility through the evening but should decrease overnight. Lows are very mild ranging from the low to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium

A look ahead

With a front stalled in our vicinity Wednesday through Friday and warm, humid air being pumped northward, we’ll continue to have the chance of showers and storms, especially in the afternoon and evening. It’s not a washout and there will be extended rain-free periods and intervals of sunshine. Highs each day range from the mid-80s to near 90 with lows in the 70s at night. Confidence: Medium

It does look like high pressure building in from the north late in the workweek will push the front away in time for the weekend. That favors sunny, dry weather and a decrease in humidity. Temperatures should still be rather warm, with highs well into the 80s with lows in the 60s to near 70. Confidence: Medium
